As the US takes control of the rotating presidency of the 15-member UN Security Council in August, its envoy to the UN announced on Tuesday that conflict-induced famine and food insecurity will be a top priority.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield informed reporters that US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will chair a high-level debate on famine and global food insecurity.
Thomas-Greenfield stated that addressing this global crisis has been a top priority for the Biden administration. She emphasized that conflict-induced hunger is a pressing issue for international peace and security and called on the Security Council to take action.
She noted that conflicts must be rooted out, as hostilities breed hunger and fighting breeds famine.
Greenfield also accused Russia of launching a full-scale assault on Ukraine, which has deprived the world of Ukraine’s critical grain exports.
She stated that food should never be used as a weapon of war and urged all member states to sign a US-drafted communique to combat food insecurity.
