Johnny Depp had a rocking and emotional birthday bash on stage as he turned 60. He performed with his band Hollywood Vampires, but without his close friend Jeff Beck, who passed away earlier this year. The Pirates of the Caribbean star rocked the crowd in Bucharest, Romania.
Johnny and Jeff had a long history of musical collaboration and friendship. They toured together last year, when Depp was struggling to rebuild his career after his high-profile libel case. Depp joined Beck on stage in Sheffield and played some songs, including John Lennon’s ‘‘Isolation’’.
Johnny and Jeff worked on several musical projects together. In 2020, they released their first official cover of John Lennon‘s ‘Isolation’. They also released an album in July last year, called 18.
The Pirates of the Caribbean star reunited with his Hollywood Vampires bandmates in Bucharest, Romania, and began his show with a touching tribute to his friend.
He dedicated David Bowie’s song, Heroes, to his late friend. In a video that was posted on Twitter, he said: “I should dedicate this song to one of all of our heroes,” and then he paused and said, “Mr. Jeff Beck.”
Fans were moved by the actor’s heartfelt homage to his departed friend. ‘‘I could feel the sorrow, the honour, and the true emptiness Johnny’s feeling with his dear, dear friend not on stage with him,’’ one fan commented.
Another said, ‘‘I know Jeff is with you!! He will always be in your heart.’’
On Thursday night, the packed arena sang ‘‘Happy Birthday" to Depp as he came on stage at midnight. Depp was amazed by the sweet gesture and said, "Wow. That’s the largest happy birthday song I’ve ever heard.’’
“Beautiful. Thank you,” the actor and musician said.
On Thursday, the band started their European tour at Bucharest’s Romexpo arena in Romania, which will go on until the end of July.
