By the time you are reading this article, it has probably been months or years since I applied the best way to quit smoking on myself. It was hard, but possible.
Now that I am writing this article, it has been almost a month since I quit smoking. I decided to share my personal experience in this article.
Almost a month ago, I read a doctor's opinion on how to quit smoking on Instagram, it was interesting to me. I didn't agree with all his comments but some parts of his speech really helped me to quit smoking.
So far, I have read a lot of articles about the ways to quit smoking and I went through almost every way you can think of, but finally one way worked for me. I hope you too can quit. Just remember one thing, the first step to find the best way to quit smoking is your own intention.
However, when you are reading my article, it means that you have already intended to quit smoking. Congratulations!
The story of me becoming a smoker
The earliest memory of smoking that I remember, ended up being slapped by my father. When I was 9 years old, once out of curiosity, I started smoking in a private place at a relative's house. But out of nowhere, my father heard of it and slapped me. The duration of this shock and not touching the cigarette for the fear of being slapped, lasted for 14 years.
In these 14 years, I did not touch cigarettes at all, but at the age of 23, on the suggestion of one of my friends, I tried flavored cigarettes at. It was really delicious and fragrant. Maybe you are asking to yourself, are cigarettes supposed to be delicious? Yes! For me, who didn't know how to smoke at all until I was 26 years old, the taste and the smoke coming out were the best feelings I could get from smoking.
Naturally, because nicotine was not absorbed by my body, I never looked for the best way to quit smoking. Because I really didn't smoke much. Smoke entered my mouth and left my mouth 🙂 but...!
This nicotine is something amazing!
This friend of mine, who used to work with me, was trying strange ways to teach me how to smoke cigarettes properly. He tried a lot, but it didn't work. I will never forget the first time I made cigarette smoke reach my lungs, it was at 8 o'clock in the evening when I was designing a website in the company and there was no one in the company but me. I went to my friend's drawer and took one of his cigarettes. The difference between this time and the previous times was that this time, at any cost, I wanted to smoke the cigarette properly. A few puffs and coughs and finally...
It was here that I realized why one can get addicted to this thing. The effect of nicotine on my body, which had never been close to such substance, was amazing. It was really pleasing. I don't forget that night, I got an envelope on the way to home and I smoked so much at home that I fell asleep randomly.
However, that feeling did not last for a long time, and that made me decide to get rid of this substance and look for the best way to quit smoking.
How did I find this best way to quit smoking?
After a while, smoking didn't make me feel good at all. Smoking has become like a daily routine for me. Apart from that, the addiction to nicotine caused me problems such as extreme fatigue, impatience, and much more.
So I decided to find the best way to quit smoking. One day when I was scrolling on Instagram, I saw a doctor's post about quitting smoking and implemented it. It was really great.
Now, the doctor's opinion.
Why can't you quit smoking? The opinion of a specialist doctor
Now, I am writing the doctor's views, that helped me quit smoking. You may not agree with all of the doctor's views and think that they are not practical, but some of the doctor's views really helped me to find the best way to quit smoking.
Today I want to talk about why trying to get rid of smoking addiction generally fails and what exactly should we do to increase the chances of quitting
One of the biggest problems that prevents you from quitting is that you think that after a few months of not smoking, you can have puffs sometimes! That is, you convince yourself that "Wow, I quit the damn cigarette and I am no longer a smoker" with this excuse, you start to puff cigarettes and smoke again!
For example, you say, now that I quit for a few months, and the weather is also nice and I am with friends, what's wrong with smoking one cigarette, how is this one cigarette supposed to help the world?! While as the reality is this: a person who gets addicted to a substance once in his life, no matter if it is drugs, alcohol or cigarettes, until the last moment of his life, he will be in a state of weakness and prone to return to addiction.
So, to quit successfully, the first step is to burst the bubble of the illusion of smoking a cigarette and say goodbye to it forever. Just remember, we don't have any non-smokers who smoke sometimes! A person either smokes or doesn't smoke, that's it. A person who is not a smoker, he under any circumstances and in any situation, does not smoke, it is over and gone!
Is the best way to quit smoking the gradual withdrawal method?
This is precisely why quitting smoking gradually does not work, and based on the research, those who are more successful in long-term quitting are those who suddenly reduce their smoking to zero.
The gradual reduction method will last only a few days! Do you know why? Because it's just a fake solution to get rid of your self-blame without really quitting. It means to satisfy the blaming part of your mind by saying, "Look man, I'm trying to quit, now leave me."
The point is here, the method you use to quit smoking is not important at all, if you are going to succeed in quitting, you really have to "intend" to quit smoking and using the gradual reduction method only means that this "intention" is never real!
You are not yet so disappointed with smoking that you want to avoid it with all your heart. Many people say that I will finally quit one day, or, for example, I want to quit smoking, but right now my work load is stressing me out or, for example, I am in the middle of shifting, whenever I shift to next home, I will quit smoking. These words, rather, these "excuses" are all nonsense!
What is the best way to quit smoking?
The reason we can't quit smoking is that nicotine has created a deep psychological craving in our subconscious that constantly forces the conscious part of the mind to make ridiculous excuses to justify and feed this insatiable craving, and it is clear that we succumb to it.
For a long time, we are addicted to nicotine. It is exactly this substance that whispers in our ears: you had a very hard day, so you deserve a cigarette, and we hear this command over and over again and obey it.
So, when the enemy facing you is psychological and has brainwashed you into continuing to smoke, you will have to fight him with psychological techniques, you have to trick your mind and psyche and convince it not to smoke, just like you tricked it to smoke until now! In fact, in order to learn the best way to quit smoking, you must be able to use this damn brain, not the other way around 🙂
So start and lie to yourself so much that you really start hating smoking. How? Now I will explain to you with an example.
Step 1: Put the blame of all problems on cigarettes
The first step, regardless of whether it seems reasonable or not, put the blame of the negativity of your life on smoking! Are you tired? It's because of cigarettes! Are you depressed? it's because of cigarettes! Has your performance dropped at work? it's because of cigarettes! Have you become rude and aggressive with your friends? it's because of cigarettes! Has the crypto market crashed? it's because of cigarettes!
Do you get it what happened? You are going to link the occurrence and presence of every negative and unhappy part of your life to smoking.
Step 2: Write the advantages and disadvantages of smoking for yourself.
Once, I was reading a book titled "Write it down. Make it happen". I can say that the best way to quit smoking was to write this list.
In the second step, write down the costs and consequences of smoking for yourself and look at your writing every day, every time you feel the urge to smoke. For example, it costs about 200 dollars per month, you spend at least 1 hour a day, you get short of breath with even a little bit of walking, you get sick all the time, you have non-stop coughing, you are all lethargic, your bad breath and body odor drive others away from you and....
In short, constantly hammer the logical and illogical things against smoking into your brain. It may seem strange to you, but this way, you will gradually hate smoking so much that you won't even believe it yourself.
The day I was looking for the best way to quit smoking, I wrote the following list for myself, which included all the pros and cons. Since I like devices a lot, I wrote this list on my tablet. But, it will be much better to write on paper and always have it in front of you to remind yourself.
The things I wrote for myself were:
Benefits of smoking
- Sometimes when I don't smoke for a long time (for example 10 hours), smoking after that really makes me feel good.
- I love to smoke in the dark or in cool and rainy weather. I can walk for hours in the street under the rain with smoking.
- Sometimes smoking really makes me feel good. For example, after a heavy workout or extreme work load.
- After a success, smoking makes me feel good. For example, when I finish a part of a difficult project, smoking makes me feel good.
- When I wake up in the morning, smoking makes me feel really good.
Advantages of quitting smoking - Disadvantages of smoking - Why I should not smoke?
- Since smoking has become a habit for me, it doesn't really make me feel special anymore. Smoking was supposed to make me feel good, but now it has become a daily routine for me. A habit without any sensation.
- Because I smoke a pack of cigarettes every day, I have to pay a lot of money for cigarettes every month. I can rather go for savings.
- I sleep too much and I hardly wake up in the morning.
- I, who used to exercise every morning, am not the same as before.
- I was always someone who didn't give up, but now I'm not the same as before.
- I feel that to some extent, smoking has lowered my self-confidence. It is true that I am still a strong person, but I want to be as strong as always.
- Smoking will definitely harm my health. I don't want to have health issues due to smoking in the upcoming years. Quitting smoking reduces the risk of heart disease, lung disease, kidney failure, infection and cancer.
- I am criticized by people who love me. Because I love them and their opinion is important to me, this smoking annoys me.
- Quitting smoking also reduces the risk of osteoporosis and sexual problems (smoking causes premature ejaculation in men and decreases libido in women). Plus, it can help our skin look younger.
- Smoking will not just affect me but those prone to second hand smoking because of me are prone to health issues.
Step 3: Promise yourself not to be influenced by smoking friends
In the third step, make a vow with yourself that if you are going to start smoking again, this time you will be alone. In other words, this carving should not be because a friend smoked next to you.
If you are looking for the best way to quit smoking, you should not be influenced by your smoking friends. There are two powerful emotions that you can use to achieve this goal.
- A sense of pride
Tell your friends and family that you have quit smoking and you will never touch to it again. That way, you probably won't be able to smoke in front of them again.
- Empathy
That is, don't let the people around you see themselves as the cause of your smoking and they feel a guilty because of you.
How this step is going to help you? Actually, when you promise yourself that you will only smoke when you are alone, you will rarely have to fight the urge and the justifications it brings. On the other hand, you can no longer use other people's smoking as an excuse or justification to smoke.
Then, gradually, you become angry if someone smokes around you, this disgust and resentment that is created in you, causes your mind to become conditioned and associate anger with smoking, as a result, subconsciously, you hate smoking more and more and your will to stay away from gets strengthened.
Take my word as someone who quit smoking. I promise you that following these steps is the best way to quit smoking. Don't stress much, take a deep breath and make up your mind.
How long does it take to quit smoking?
In general, if you implement your decision to quit, without a doubt, there will be days when you feel the urge to smoke, which will be unbearable. The first week, you definitely need tremendous willpower. It's like putting a steak in front of a hungry person and asking him not to touch it.
It is more likely that you look for the best way to quit smoking when you are done with cigarettes, but in the first week, you will feel like a hungry person who has a delicious pizza in front of him. Just resist a little.
The second week would still seem to be difficult, but if you resisted so far, your motivation and willpower is increased.
The third week will be easier because the frequency and duration of these cravings will decrease over time. In the fourth week, you will probably spend most of the day without any cravings, and from there on, the rest of the road will be downhill.
I, who ended up quitting smoking, my final opinion
I know the most important reason that made me quit smoking is my personal decision. Right after I made the decision, I started reading the opinions of experts and doctors.
The fact that you are reading this article means that you have decided. The fact that you are looking for the best way to quit smoking means that you have started quitting smoking. Do not doubt that quitting it is really enjoyable. What is more beautiful than to prove to yourself that you can 🙂. I hope you too can quit smoking like me.
