China has reported five human cases of cutaneous anthrax, a rare and serious disease, after five farm workers in eastern Shandong province came into contact with infected animals at a beef cattle farm. The infected individuals have been treated and are being kept in isolation, with their close contacts being monitored under strict surveillance.
Cutaneous anthrax, also known as skin anthrax, is typically caused by direct contact with infected animals or contaminated animal products such as wool, hides, or hair. It can occur when anthrax spores enter a cut or scrape on the skin, resulting in symptoms such as skin lesions, swelling, and pain.
The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) defines four types of anthrax: cutaneous, inhalation, gastrointestinal, and injection. Cutaneous anthrax is the most common type of anthrax and is typically mild, but it can still be serious if left untreated.
The Chinese government has taken swift action to contain the outbreak, isolating the infected individuals and monitoring their close contacts.
