The UN migration agency has recorded more than 1,000 deaths of migrants trying to cross the central Mediterranean Sea to reach Europe in the first four months of 2023. This is a 33% increase compared to the same period last year, according to the agency’s Missing Migrants project.
The agency said that this number is likely an underestimate, as many migrants’ distress calls are ignored and their deaths are not counted. It said that migrants risk their lives every day on overcrowded and unsafe boats, hoping to find “safety, protection, or a better life in Europe.”
It urged the international community to take action to prevent more tragedies at sea. It called on states to respect their legal obligations and prioritize swift search and rescue operations and expand safe channels for migrants and refugees.
“We simply cannot become numb to such a staggering loss of human lives,” the agency said.
"We call on States to fulfill their legal obligation by prioritizing swift search and rescue operations and expanding safe channels for migrants and refugees," it concluded.
