The UN expressed extreme worry on Thursday about the Taliban’s intention to prevent international groups from offering education in the country.
“This would be a terrible setback for the people of Afghanistan and especially for women and girls, if this were to happen,” UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said.
“We are trying to find out exactly what they are planning. We have not received anything official. Our colleagues in Kabul are talking to the authorities that are in charge.”
“We want to ensure that the authorities that are in charge guarantee the right to education for children and young adults. Everyone has a right to an education,” he added.
This is another restriction in the country after the Taliban’s order in December 2022 that forbade Afghan women from working for NGOs.
The Taliban’s takeover of Afghanistan on Aug. 15, 2021, along with the interruption of international financial aid, has plunged the country into crises of economy, humanitarianism and human rights.
The Taliban rulers have violated human rights repeatedly despite their promises to respect human and women’s rights.
Women and girls have lost their rights, including the right to education, and have been erased from public life under the Taliban.
Thousands of women have either been fired or forced to quit from government and private sector jobs since then.
