The UN children's agency, UNICEF, has issued a strong plea for an immediate halt to the armed violence that took place in the city of Jenin in the occupied West Bank, resulting in the tragic deaths of at least three children on Monday.
In a statement, UNICEF expressed its deep condemnation of all acts of violence targeting children and urgently called for an end to the ongoing armed conflict.
According to the most recent updates, not only were three children tragically killed, but numerous others also sustained injuries. Additionally, the violence has led to the displacement of hundreds of families, further exacerbating the already dire situation.
In recent months, there has been a significant escalation of tensions throughout the occupied West Bank, primarily due to repeated Israeli incursions into Palestinian towns.
On Monday, the Israeli forces initiated their most extensive military operation in Jenin in over two decades. Tragically, this operation resulted in the loss of at least 10 Palestinian lives and left over 100 others injured, as reported by the Palestinian Health Ministry. The severity of the situation underscores the gravity of the ongoing conflict.
UNICEF has highlighted the distressing reality that children have been exposed to recurring cycles of violence over the past two years. This includes three major escalations in and around the Gaza Strip, as well as numerous conflict-related incidents in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem.
Tragically, since the start of this year, a total of 33 children have lost their lives, with 27 Palestinians and 6 Israelis among the casualties, as reported by UNICEF.
The agency strongly emphasizes that grave violations against children, such as killings and injuries, are completely unacceptable. The protection and well-being of children should always be a top priority, and such acts of violence must be condemned and prevented.
The agency earnestly appealed to all parties involved to prioritize the safety and well-being of children and to abstain from resorting to violence, particularly when it comes to children.
