In a tragic incident, Gaza's al-Ahli Arab Hospital became the scene of horror as it was targeted during a deadly attack while already overwhelmed with thousands of Palestinians seeking refuge from Israeli assaults.
The morning after the assault, the grounds of Al-Ahli Arab Hospital told a grim tale - bloodstains on concrete and grass, torn bedding, glimmering glass shards juxtaposed with shattered paving blocks, and the charred remnants of cars. The hospital, which had stood for over 140 years delivering health services, bore witness to a massacre that claimed the lives of at least 500 individuals, according to Mohammed al-Nageh, the hospital's director of programs and coordination.
The survivors, numbering around 3,000, had sought shelter in the hospital after surviving missile attacks in other parts of Gaza. The garden courtyard and upper floors of the hospital building were turned into makeshift sanctuaries. Those fortunate enough not to be among the casualties roamed the premises in shock, salvaging whatever usable belongings remained or assisting in the retrieval of the deceased and body parts.
Mohammed al-Nageh condemned the attack, labeling it a "crime against humanity." Al Jazeera reported him saying, "This hospital, which has functioned and delivered health services for more than 140 years, was attacked in the most brutal manner, massacring more than 500 souls."
Ambulances and private vehicles raced against time to transport the numerous casualties to al-Shifa Hospital, Gaza City's largest medical complex, which was already strained from the influx of wounded individuals due to Israel's ongoing bombardment of the Gaza Strip. Ashraf al-Qidra, the spokesperson for Gaza's health ministry, described the victims arriving with horrific injuries, including decapitation, disembowelment, and missing limbs.
Health officials expressed concern over the majority of the victims being women and children, emphasizing that the death toll was anticipated to climb as the situation unfolded. The assault on al-Ahli Arab Hospital adds another dark chapter to the human rights crisis unfolding in the region.
