United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has expressed his "extreme sorrow" and condemnation over the deaths of hundreds of Palestinian civilians in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the Gaza Strip. The deadly attack was carried out by Israel to free four hostages.
UN spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters that the Secretary-General is deeply troubled by the loss of life and injuries suffered by Palestinians during the operation. He reiterated the call for all parties to protect civilians and emphasized that every loss of life is tragic.
According to information from the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), hospitals in the region are overflowing with wounded patients. Dujarric highlighted the importance of respecting the independence of humanitarian operations and aid workers worldwide.
The Israeli military operation, which took place on Saturday, resulted in the death of at least 274 Palestinians and injured over 700 others. The Gaza Health Ministry has reported that more than 37,100 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza since the start of the conflict, with nearly 84,700 others injured.
The situation in Gaza remains dire, with vast tracts of land in ruins and a crippling blockade of food, clean water, and medicine. The UN chief's condemnation is a stark reminder of the need for urgent action to protect civilians and promote a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
