The ongoing conflict in Gaza has reached its 10th month, with the Israeli military continuing to wreak havoc on the besieged enclave. The war has resulted in the deaths of over 38,000 Palestinians and the destruction of nearly the entire territory. The Western nations that have been providing military equipment and support to Israel have been accused of exacerbating the crisis and potentially aiding and abetting a genocide.
Germany, the second-largest arms supplier to Israel after the US, has continued to provide military equipment despite global condemnation and calls for an end to arms sales. The country has supplied Israel with submarines, warships, vehicle and aircraft engines, and torpedoes, often covering a third of the cost as military aid.
The US has also been a major player in fueling the conflict, providing over 100 separate foreign military sales to Israel since October 7, including air defenses, precision-guided munitions, artillery shells, tank rounds, and small arms. The Pentagon has also leased back two Iron Dome batteries to Israel and transferred Tamir interceptors from its own inventory.
Italy and the UK have also been major suppliers of military equipment to Israel, with Italy exporting weapons and ammunition worth €2.1 million in the last quarter of 2023 and the UK authorizing arms exports valued at £560 million since 2008.
Humanitarian organizations and experts have urged the international community to impose a weapons embargo on Israel, but so far, only the UN Human Rights Council has approved such a measure. The US and Germany were among those who opposed the proposal.
The continued flow of arms to Israel has raised concerns that Western nations are complicit in perpetuating a humanitarian crisis that has resulted in catastrophic consequences for civilians in Gaza. As long as this continues, it is unlikely that a peaceful resolution can be reached.
