The UN special coordinator for the Middle East peace process has expressed deep concern over an Israeli attack on a school sheltering displaced Palestinians in the central Gaza Strip, which has resulted in the deaths of at least 100 people and many more injuries.
The devastating strike on the Al-Taba'een School in Gaza City, which was targeted during fajr (dawn) prayers, has left thousands of displaced Palestinians without shelter and without access to basic necessities.
The UN special coordinator, Tor Wennesland, has called for an immediate ceasefire and a hostage release deal to end the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. He emphasized that civilians are bearing the brunt of the conflict and that the cost in lives is evident with every passing day.
The Israeli attack comes despite appeals from mediators to stop hostilities and reach a cease-fire. The conflict has been ongoing since October, with nearly 39,800 people killed and thousands more injured.
Wennesland urged all parties to work towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict and stressed that the UN is committed to supporting all efforts towards that goal.
The UN special coordinator also emphasized that an end to this nightmare is long overdue. The international community must come together to demand an immediate ceasefire and a humanitarian solution to the crisis in Gaza.
