In response to the escalating tensions between Israel and Palestine, UEFA has taken the decision to postpone several upcoming football matches in Israel until October 17. The European football governing body cited the current security situation as the primary reason for this move and stated that new dates for the affected matches would be announced in due course.
The postponed matches include the UEFA EURO 2024 qualifiers between Israel and Switzerland on October 12, as well as the 2025 UEFA Under-21 Championship qualification matches featuring Israel against Estonia on October 12 and Germany on October 17. Additionally, a mini-tournament, the 2024 UEFA Under-17 Championship, involving Israel, Belgium, Gibraltar, and Wales, scheduled from October 11 to 17, has also been impacted.
UEFA has reserved a few more days to assess whether the European Qualifiers 2024 match between Kosovo and Israel, initially planned for October 15, can proceed or requires further postponement. The governing body emphasized that it will closely monitor the situation in Israel and maintain communication with the teams involved before making decisions about rescheduled dates.
The decision comes against the backdrop of the Palestinian group Hamas launching Operation Al-Aqsa Flood in response to the storming of the Al-Aqsa Mosque and increased settler violence. Hamas claimed to have fired rockets and captured several Israelis. In retaliation, the Israeli army initiated Operation Swords of Iron, conducting airstrikes on the Gaza Strip. UEFA's move reflects the organization's commitment to prioritizing the safety and security of players and stakeholders amid the ongoing unrest in the region.
