Israel has taken unprecedented measures to ensure the safety of its athletes at the upcoming Olympic Games, dispatching a team of armed agents from its internal security service, Shin Bet, to provide protection for its delegation.
The security operation, the largest ever undertaken by Israel for the Olympics, will involve around 88 Israeli athletes and their teams, with Shin Bet agents providing security cover at every stage of their journey, from arrival to departure. The move comes amid concerns over alleged security threats and amid growing calls for Israel's expulsion from the international sporting event.
The Shin Bet agents will be equipped with weapons and technology and will receive support from local security and police forces. While not all athletes will have a personal bodyguard, the Israeli government has doubled its Olympic security budget this year, with Culture and Sports Minister Miki Zohar stating that preparations have been underway for over a year.
The decision to deploy Shin Bet agents comes after Israeli athletes received threatening online messages and emails in poorly written Hebrew, warning of fatal consequences if they attended the Games. The threats are part of a wider campaign against Israel's participation in the Olympics, with activists, politicians, and athletes calling for the country's expulsion from the event.
The situation is further complicated by Israel's ongoing military offensive in Gaza, which has resulted in significant civilian casualties. The Palestinian death toll has reached nearly 39,000, with over 89,700 injured since an October 7 attack by Hamas.
