Team Belgium has announced that they will be withdrawing from the mixed relay triathlon event at the Paris 2024 Olympics, citing an illness that has struck one of their top athletes.
According to sources, Belgian triathlete Claire Michel, 35, who swam in the River Seine during the women's individual event on July 31, has fallen ill and will not be able to participate in the competition.
The decision was made after consultation with Michel and her entourage, and the team will not be participating in the mixed relay event on Monday.
The news comes as a surprise, as Michel was a key member of the Belgian team and had been expected to play a crucial role in the relay.
It's unclear at this time what the exact nature of Michel's illness is, but reports indicate that she has been taken to a hospital for treatment.
The Paris 2024 Olympics have already faced some challenges, including the cancellation of a triathlon training session due to pollution in the River Seine. The event has seen some exciting competition so far, with France's Cassandre Beaugrand and Team Great Britain's Alex Yee winning gold medals in the women's and men's individual triathlon events respectively.
The Olympics are set to conclude on August 11, but for now, Team Belgium will be focusing on getting Michel back to full health.
