Real Madrid has won the 2024 UEFA Super Cup, defeating Italian Serie A club Atalanta 2-0 in a thrilling match at the Warsaw National Stadium.
The Spanish La Liga powerhouse took the lead in the 59th minute when Federico Valverde scored an empty-net goal, putting the ball into the net after Atalanta's goalkeeper Juan Musso had gone out of position.
Real Madrid sealed the victory in the 68th minute when French superstar Kylian Mbappe, making his official debut for the club, scored the second goal. Mbappe's goal was a significant moment for both the player and the team, as it marked Real Madrid's sixth UEFA Super Cup title.
Real Madrid's coach Carlo Ancelotti became the only manager to win five UEFA Super Cup titles, cementing his status as one of the greatest coaches in the competition's history.
The victory was a dominant performance by Real Madrid, who had several chances to score throughout the game. Eder Militao's deflection hit the crossbar in the 26th minute, while Rodrygo's shot skimmed the top of the crossbar just before halftime. Jude Bellingham also had several chances to score, but was denied by Musso on multiple occasions.
Atalanta, on the other hand, struggled to create scoring opportunities and was unable to capitalize on its few chances. The Italian club's best chance came in the 47th minute when Mario Pasalic's header was tipped over the bar by Real Madrid's goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.
With this victory, Real Madrid has surpassed Barcelona and AC Milan to become the most successful team in the UEFA Super Cup competition.
