Elon Musk, CEO of social media platform X, suggested a modest fee for new users to engage with posts, such as writing, replying, or liking, during a post on X on Monday.
Musk argued that this measure was necessary to combat the growing issue of bots inundating the platform. "Current AI (and troll farms) can easily bypass bot detection," he noted.
Expanding on the problem of fake accounts saturating X with misinformation and spam, Musk highlighted that legitimate usernames were being claimed by these accounts due to the influx.
Despite the inconvenience of the proposed fee, Musk emphasized its potential benefits, clarifying that it would only apply to new users and would be waived after three months.
Details regarding the implementation timeline and the specific fee structure for new users have not been disclosed yet.
Last October, X introduced a $1 yearly fee for new unverified users in New Zealand and the Philippines to deter spam and bot activity.
