US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Saudi Arabia on Tuesday for a three-day visit, the Saudi Al-Arabiya channel reported.
Blinken is seeking to improve Washington’s ties with Riyadh, which have been strained by differences over Iran, oil prices, and human rights issues.
He is expected to hold talks with senior Saudi officials, including Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, in Riyadh and Jeddah.
The visit comes as Riyadh faces regional challenges, such as the reopening of Iran’s embassy in the kingdom after seven years of diplomatic rupture, and the pressure to cut oil production amid rising global demand.
The US State Department said Blinken will participate in a ministerial meeting with Gulf Cooperation Council countries (GCC) on Wednesday to discuss cooperation on security, stability, de-escalation, regional integration, and economic opportunities in the Middle East.
On Thursday, Blinken and Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan will co-chair a ministerial meeting in Riyadh on the global coalition to defeat the Daesh/ISIS terrorist group, the department added.
