A recent poll of the most popular candidates to replace Benjamin Netanyahu as the leader of the right-wing Likud party suggests that the process of succession has begun. The poll was conducted by several media outlets and research institutes in Israel, including the 12 TV channel and the E-Panel institute. They surveyed the opinions of the members of the ruling Likud party to find out who has the best chance of succeeding Netanyahu if he leaves power.
The Poll Results
According to the poll results, 22 percent of the participants chose Nir Barakat, a former mayor of Jerusalem, as the best option to replace Netanyahu. 15 percent picked Yossi Cohen, the former head of the Mossad spy agency. 9 percent favored Yoav Galant, the current defense minister. 8 percent preferred Yariv Levin, the current justice minister. And 5 percent selected Gilad Erdan, the current ambassador to the United Nations.
The poll also found that only 10 percent of Likud supporters believe that it is possible to pass the judicial reform law proposed by Netanyahu and his coalition. This law aims to limit the power of the Supreme Court and protect Netanyahu from prosecution on corruption charges. 57 percent said that they think that this law will be changed or partially approved. 13 percent said that this law will be dropped from the agenda. 20 percent said that they don’t know. And only 12 percent said that they hope that this law will be fully approved.
The Negotiations Deadlock
Meanwhile, the Hebrew-language newspaper Yisrael Hayom reported that the negotiations to resolve the differences over the judicial reform law, which are taking place at the president’s office, have reached a deadlock. This could lead to more tension and popular protests in Israel.
According to this report, despite some agreements on minor issues, the Likud party insists on passing the judicial reform law as it is and refuses to compromise with the opposition. The opposition parties demand that all judicial reforms be suspended until a new government is formed. Both sides expect the other side to back down and make the first move. The negotiations are becoming more tense and confrontational. The president’s efforts to prevent a failure are met with resistance from both sides.
The report also predicted that these negotiations will soon turn into a media war between the parties, which could create a big crisis for Israel’s domestic scene.
The Public Unrest
It has been more than twenty-three years now that Jews living in Israel have been protesting against Netanyahu’s policies on various issues. The number of protesters is increasing every time. They also complain about high prices and inflation in this regime.
Inflation and high prices in Israel have caused many Jews to emigrate from this regime back to their original countries. They had come to Israel with false promises, but now they realize that they were deceived. This has become one of the main concerns of Israeli politicians.
The Population Issue
Israeli politicians also believe that they need to have more people than the Palestinians to maintain their control and authority over them. They fear that if they lose their demographic advantage, they will lose their sovereignty and domination over the Palestinians.
