Here is a historical and very beautiful castle in the heart of the forest, which in the past was one of the most important military strongholds of Iran and has experienced many historical events over the years, but still stands with splendor and now to one It has become one of the tourist spots of Fuman city in Gilan province.
To reach this mysterious fortress, you have to climb 1200 steps from Rudkhan village to the castle itself, for this reason, it is also called thousand-steps. Rudkhan Fortress dates back to the Sassanian era, this castle was rebuilt during the Seljuk period. The Ismailis used the fort as a base of operations, and it is said that Mirza Kuchak Khan Jangali also used it as a hideout.
One of the characteristics of this castle is its strength and its invincibility due to its location. In addition to sightseeing, it might be a good idea to shop at the bazaar, which is located at the beginning of the road to the castle and near the Rudkhan River. In this bazaar, you can rest for a while and prepare a variety of Fuman souvenirs. Here is how to prepare Fuman cookies. Roll out the dough and make a hole in the bottom with your hands. Pour in the middle ingredients including sugar, cardamom powder, cinnamon powder and chopped walnuts and collect it. Roll out the cookie dough and roll it out. This castle with an area of 6.2 hectares is the largest brick castle in Iran. Rudkhan Castle is located at an altitude of 715 meters above sea level and its wall height is one thousand five hundred meters and has 65 towers and fortifications. Rudkhan fort includes 2 parts of the citadel and the storage of weapons. A 2-storey brick citadel was built in the western part of the castle, which has 12 entrances. Fountains, ponds, reservoirs, cold storages, baths, the royal catchment area and several residential units surrounded by towers and fortifications are other parts of the citadel. The storage of weapons is 2 floors and in the eastern part of the castle, with multiple skylights and openings dominates the surrounding areas. This section also includes 12 entrances, a prison, an emergency door, a bathroom and a catchment area. Forty watchtowers with octagonal rooms with domed arches surround the castle.
Around the walls and towers there are sloping openings that were used to pour molten material and shoot during enemy attacks. In addition, there is a steep slope around the castle to protect it. The solid architecture and the existence of this slope made it impossible for any enemy in history to conquer this great fortress. The strength of this fort is such that it was not damaged in the 1990 earthquake in Gilan province.
