The Israeli parliament's approval of judicial reforms proposed by Benjamin Netanyahu's right-wing government, which aim to restrict the Supreme Court's power to overturn government decisions, has sparked a strong reaction from the domestic opposition. Additionally, tens of thousands of people have continued to protest against these reforms in recent months. These developments have also garnered international attention, including from Israel's allies.
On Monday, the White House issued a statement urging for a "consensus" to prevent widespread protests. The statement expressed regret over the Israeli parliament's affirmative vote on a crucial aspect of the judicial reforms, which seek to curtail certain powers of the Supreme Court.
During a press conference, White House spokesperson Karin Jean-Pierre stated that US President Joe Biden, a steadfast ally of Israel, has consistently emphasized the importance of achieving a broad consensus for fundamental democratic changes to ensure their stability. This sentiment has been expressed by President Biden both publicly and in private discussions.
Jean-Pierre further commented that it is regrettable that today's vote occurred with the narrowest of majorities. The understanding is that negotiations are still in progress and will continue in the coming months, even with the closure of the Knesset (Israeli parliament), in order to achieve a more comprehensive agreement. The United States is supportive of the endeavors of Isaac Herzog and other Israeli leaders as they strive to attain a broader consensus through political dialogue.
