In a recent statement, President Alexander Lukashenko of Belarus declared that his country would take immediate action in the face of aggressive actions by Ukraine, the Baltic countries, or Poland. Lukashenko emphasized that the sole significant threat to his nation was aggression, and he asserted that any such provocation would be met with an instantaneous and robust response.
During an interview with Ukrainian journalist Diana Panchenko, which was published on her YouTube channel, Lukashenko underscored his stance. Russian state news agency TASS reported that Lukashenko stated, "There can only be one threat: aggression against our country. If aggression begins even on the part of Ukraine, on the part of Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, we will respond instantly with everything that we have."
Lukashenko further clarified that Belarus had no intentions of engaging in competition with its neighboring nations. Nevertheless, he warned of a forceful countermeasure that would result in significant losses and damages for any aggressor.
He also referenced a conversation he had with Russian President Vladimir Putin regarding the situation in Ukraine. Lukashenko mentioned that while the Russian forces had surrounded Kyiv during the conflict, they refrained from storming the city to avoid the loss of countless lives. "We had a conversation with (Russian President Vladimir) Putin in connection with this. I say, ‘In order for the war to end, naturally, the capital needs to be taken.’ He says to me: 'You know, it can be done immediately, instantly, but a huge number of people will die,'" Lukashenko recounted.
Furthermore, Lukashenko warned Ukraine about the potential consequences of persisting in its military activities. He stressed the importance of moving towards a peaceful resolution. "The first step that needs to be taken is establishing peace," Lukashenko urged, suggesting that Kyiv reconsider its course of action.
As tensions continue to simmer in the region, Lukashenko's remarks highlight the seriousness with which Belarus views any aggression against its sovereignty. The president's firm stance indicates that Belarus is prepared to defend itself and respond resolutely to any potential threats from its neighboring countries.
