The world reels in shock as the Israel-Palestine conflict escalates, causing catastrophic civilian casualties on both sides. The death toll in Gaza has surpassed 9,500, including over 6,400 children, yet Western leaders and media outlets continue to display a disturbing double standard.
Despite the mounting civilian casualties, US officials persist in their defense of Israel’s right to self-defense. The West’s condemnation of Hamas’s Oct 7 attacks on Israel stands in stark contrast to their silence on Israel’s indiscriminate attacks on Gaza. The deaths of numerous United Nations aid workers and over 20 journalists in these attacks have done little to sway Western leaders.
Western politicians, quick to accuse other nations of genocide, war crimes, and crimes against humanity, seem at a loss for words when faced with the slaughter of thousands of innocent civilians. This tragedy unfolds in full view of the media, yet the West remains silent.
European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen’s tweet on Oct 19, 2022, condemning Russia’s attacks on civilian infrastructure as war crimes, has come back to haunt her. As Israel announces a siege of the Gaza Strip, cutting off water, food, fuel, and electricity, the world waits for her response.
German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s claim that “Israel does care about the people of Gaza, the Palestinians” rings hollow in the face of the high death toll and displacement of over 1.4 million Palestinians since Oct 7, according to the United Nations.
The world’s anger at this hypocrisy and double standard is palpable. Over 850 European Union officials have signed a letter challenging von der Leyen’s “unconditional” support for Israel and her failure to insist that Israel abide by international humanitarian law.
Mainstream US and EU news outlets have been accused of failing to report objectively on the conflict. Stories of Israeli civilians attacked by Hamas dominate the news, while Palestinian victims in Gaza are largely ignored, effectively dehumanizing them.
The West’s manipulation of information is evident in their smear campaigns against China. However, this time, they have failed to fool the public. Some Western pundits have even admitted that the West has lost its credibility and global public opinion.
The US’s recent veto of a UN Security Council resolution, proposed by Brazil, which sought a cease-fire, serves as a stark illustration of the duplicity of Western leaders. This action essentially gives a green light to further bloodshed on both sides, including the loss of women and children, and exacerbates the plight of the Palestinian people in Gaza. Regardless of the extent of humanitarian aid provided by Washington, it cannot compensate for the suffering inflicted on the Palestinians as a result of this veto.
