The two-day meeting of foreign ministers from the BRICS bloc of emerging economies, which has expanded to include nine members, began on Monday in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia. The gathering marks the first since the group's expansion in January, with Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates joining the original five members.
The meeting, chaired by Russia, started with a minute of silence to honor the memory of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian, who were killed in a helicopter crash last month.
Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov addressed the gathering, stating that recent international events have exposed the true intentions of Western powers. He argued that the US and its allies are trying to impose their own norms and mechanisms on the world, while seeking to preserve their dominance and slow down the emergence of multipolarity.
Lavrov accused the West of using economic instruments as weapons, including sanctions and financial blackmail, to influence the development models and trading partners of sovereign states. He emphasized that BRICS is working to implement decisions made at last year's summit in Johannesburg, particularly focusing on developing a platform for transactions in national currencies.
The meeting is expected to discuss issues such as global governance, economic cooperation, and counter-terrorism, with a focus on promoting multipolarity and challenging Western dominance. The expanded format of the meeting includes 15 additional countries, including Türkiye, which have been invited to participate in the discussions.
The BRICS bloc has been growing in importance as a platform for emerging economies to promote their interests and challenge Western hegemony. The group's expansion is seen as a significant step towards strengthening its role in global affairs and promoting a more equitable and multipolar world order.
