Thailand's Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa has declared his country's willingness to join the BRICS economic bloc "as soon as possible" during a meeting with his Chinese counterpart Wang Yi on the sidelines of the BRICS Foreign Ministers' Summit.
The statement comes after Thailand's Cabinet approved a government draft letter indicating its intention to join the bloc, which includes Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa. The BRICS bloc has been expanding its membership in recent years, welcoming Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates as full members in January.
Thailand's desire to join the BRICS bloc reflects its desire to play a more active role in South-South cooperation and strengthen its coordination with China on multilateral platforms. The country is seeking to strengthen its economic ties with the BRICS bloc, which accounts for 35.6% of global GDP in purchasing power parity, surpassing the Group of Seven's 30.3%.
The BRICS+ summit in Nizhny Novgorod brought together over 250 events in more than 10 Russian cities this year, with the main event being the BRICS leaders' summit in Kazan on October 22-24. Russia is currently chairing the BRICS bloc, with a focus on prioritizing politics and security, economics and finance, and cultural and humanitarian relations.
