Russia has vowed to destroy any weapons sent to Ukraine amid reports that the US is planning to transfer aging Patriot air defense systems from Israel to the conflict-torn country. Vassily Nebenzia, Russia's permanent representative to the United Nations, made the warning at a press conference after Russia took over the one-month presidency of the Security Council.
"We are discouraging all countries that have not yet done so from providing arms for Ukraine," Nebenzia said, emphasizing that any weapons sent to Ukraine will ultimately be destroyed. The Russian envoy also accused Western countries of supplying Ukraine with weapons, saying that they will "be destroyed as the other weapons that the West and the US are supplying Ukraine with."
In related news, Russia has expressed skepticism over former US President Donald Trump's recent claims that he could end the Ukraine war in a day if re-elected. Nebenzia dismissed the statement, saying that the Ukrainian crisis cannot be resolved overnight.
The Russian envoy also touched on President Vladimir Putin's June 14 proposal for a solution to the conflict, which includes Ukraine withdrawing its troops from four eastern regions, acknowledging Russia's territorial gains, and confirming its neutrality. Putin has also demanded the cancellation of Western sanctions against Russia.
Nebenzia's comments came as tensions between Russia and Western countries continue to escalate. He criticized European nations for refusing to acknowledge the emergence of new power centers, describing them as "minions" trying to maintain their dominance. He also noted that many countries are seeking greater prominence in global politics, which is reflected in the ongoing Security Council reform process.
During Russia's presidency of the Security Council, Nebenzia announced three "signature events" to be chaired by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The events will focus on maintaining international peace and security, cooperation between the UN and regional organizations, and the Middle East situation. The situation in Palestine will also remain a priority during Russia's tenure.
