In an address to the United Nations Security Council, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov warned that the foundations of the international legal order, strategic stability, and the UN-centric system of global politics are under unprecedented pressure. He claimed that the US is aggressively dismantling the global system, built to contain Russia and other emerging powers, and accused Washington of seeking to impose its own exceptionalism on the world.
Lavrov accused the US of using coercion and unilateral measures to advance its own interests, citing examples such as the Nord Stream gas pipeline attacks and economic sanctions against countries deemed "undesirable". He also criticized the US for demanding unquestioning obedience from its allies, even when it contradicts their national interests.
The Russian diplomat also warned that conflicts are multiplying and that it will be impossible to resolve them without addressing their root causes and restoring faith in international cooperation for the common good.
Ukraine and dozens of other nations rebuked Russia for holding the session, accusing Moscow of hypocrisy and attempting to present itself as the guardian of multilateral order while violating international law. Ukraine's UN envoy, Sergiy Kyslytsya, condemned Russia's aggression against Ukraine and reaffirmed support for Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity.
The debate highlighted deepening divisions between Russia and the West, with Russia pushing back against what it sees as Western efforts to undermine its influence and security. The meeting comes as tensions between Russia and the West remain high over issues such as Ukraine, Syria, and nuclear arms control.
