The Kremlin has expressed no surprise at US President Joe Biden's decision to withdraw from the 2024 presidential race and endorse his vice president, Kamala Harris, as the Democratic nominee.
"We're not surprised by anything that happens in the US anymore," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said during a press briefing on Monday. "The past few years have taught us to expect the unexpected."
Peskov also indicated that the Kremlin does not anticipate any significant improvements in US-Russia relations before the end of Biden's term in office. "We're closely monitoring developments in the US and around the world, and we don't expect any positive steps from the current administration," he stated.
Regarding Harris's nomination, Peskov said that Russia cannot assess her potential candidacy in terms of bilateral relations with the US, as there has been no notable contribution from her to date.
The Kremlin views Russia-US relations as crucial, describing the current period as one of the worst in history. Peskov emphasized that Moscow will continue to closely monitor developments in the US and around the world to determine how they may impact its relations with other nations.
