Former US President Donald Trump has made headlines by publishing a letter from Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian Authority, on his social media platform "Truth Social". The letter, dated July 14, expresses Abbas's concerns about the recent assassination attempt on Trump and emphasizes the importance of peaceful resolutions.
In the letter, Abbas states that "violent actions should not have a place in the world of law and order". Trump responded to the letter, thanking Abbas for his concern and expressing hope that everything will be fine. The former President also mentioned that he is eager to meet with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu and work towards achieving peace in the Middle East.
This move comes as a surprise, given the tense relations between the US and Palestinian Authority under Trump's presidency. In 2017, Trump recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and announced plans to move the US embassy from Tel Aviv. The move was met with widespread criticism from Palestinian leaders, including Abbas.
Trump's administration also presented a two-state solution to the Palestinian problem in 2020, which was rejected by Abbas. Despite this, a former official from Trump's administration has praised his approach to supporting Israel, stating that it has been "unparalleled".
The official highlighted several key decisions made by Trump during his presidency, including cutting aid to UNRWA, withdrawing from the JCPOA (Iran nuclear deal), recognizing Israel's sovereignty over the Golan Heights, and taking executive action against anti-Zionist activities on university campuses.
The meeting between Trump and Netanyahu is scheduled for Friday, following Netanyahu's visit to Washington DC to address the US Congress.
