In a statement issued on Monday, the International Union of Muslim Scholars (IUMS) called on the Bangladesh Army to protect the country and facilitate a peaceful transition to an interim civilian government. The statement comes amid a deepening crisis in Bangladesh, where Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled to India after violent student protests over government job quotas escalated.
The IUMS expressed solidarity with the Bangladeshi people, urging the army to take immediate action to restore order and ensure transparent elections are held. The statement also called on citizens to maintain peace and prevent any attacks on state and private property.
Protesters in the capital, Dhaka, have been torching government buildings and the headquarters of the ruling Awami League party, sparking widespread chaos and destruction. The Bangladesh military chief, Gen. Waker-uz-Zaman, announced a transitional government earlier today, following Hasina's departure from the country.
The protests, which began in early July as university student-led demonstrations against controversial civil service job quotas, have resulted in an estimated 400 deaths, according to local media reports.
