The French newspaper Le Figaro has asserted that recent developments in West Asia over the past two weeks demonstrate the U.S. government's diminished capacity to influence the unfolding events in the region. In a report published on Wednesday, Le Figaro commented on the escalation of conflict in Lebanon and Iran's recent military operations in the occupied territories, suggesting that these developments will compel U.S. President Joe Biden to respond to situations that are increasingly beyond his control.
According to a report from Al-Mayadeen, Le Figaro noted that President Biden has lost his initiative in the Middle East following the failure of his efforts to broker a ceasefire in Gaza. The newspaper stated, “The American president sees the specter of a regional war approaching and is attempting to avoid it.”
The report highlighted that Iran's recent missile operations aimed at the occupied territories have underscored the irony of the ceasefires that the U.S. government had sought to initiate at the end of its last administration. As a result, Washington finds itself in a reactive position regarding events over which it currently has no control.
Le Figaro added that after six months, the United States is once again in the uncomfortable position of being responsible for the protection of Israel. The paper noted that strategic decisions and initiatives now rest primarily with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has reportedly been less transparent with U.S. officials about his plans while still relying on Washington for military and diplomatic support.
The publication characterized recent events at the United Nations as an affront to American leadership by Netanyahu and his allies. It pointed out that following President Biden's speech at the United Nations last Wednesday, in which he called for a de-escalation of tensions, Netanyahu delivered a defiant address advocating military actions instead, dispatching forces to the southern suburbs of Beirut with the stated intent of targeting Hezbollah Secretary General Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah.
In conclusion, Le Figaro noted that last April, Israel did not inform the United States about its attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, an action that precipitated Iran’s first direct strike against Israel. The newspaper stated that the events of the past two weeks further illustrate the United States' inability to influence rapidly evolving situations in West Asia.
