Rep. Ilhan Omar met with the recently ousted Pakistani prime minister on Wednesday.
The Minnesota Democrat had a discussion with Imran Khan at his home in Islamabad’s Bani Gala district, expressing her admiration for him.
He "appreciated her courageous & principled position on issues," according to a social media post shared by a member of Khan's political party, PTI.
The post also said Omar, one of the few Muslim members of Congress, expressed admiration for Khan's "work against Islamophobia globally."
Omar's visit to Pakistan also saw her meet other major politicians in the country, including President Arif Alvi and Speaker of the National Assembly Raja Pervaiz Ashraf.
Khan was ousted from his prime minister post via a no-confidence vote on April 10. Shehbaz Sharif, the new prime minister, will serve out the remainder of Khan's term until a general election is held in 2023.
The former prime minister accused Donald Lu, the assistant U.S. secretary of state for the Bureau of South and Central Asian affairs, of playing a role in a conspiracy to overthrow his government on April 3. A State Department spokesperson told the Washington Examiner there is no truth to Khan's claims.
