More than 100 lives lost and over 280 individuals injured in two explosions during a ceremony commemorating the martyrdom of top IRGC commander Qassem Soleimani in the southeastern city of Kerman have led to a strong global response. Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran's supreme leader, and President Ebrahim Raisi vowed a harsh response to the attack.
In a statement, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said, "The evil and criminal enemies of the Iranian nation once again created a disaster and martyred a large number of dear people in Kerman. This disaster will have a harsh response, God willing."
President Ebrahim Raisi declared Thursday a national day of mourning, emphasizing that the perpetrators of the cowardly act would be identified and punished.
The ISIL (ISIS) armed group claimed responsibility for the bombings, stating that two of its members activated explosives vests near Soleimani's grave.
The international community, including the United Nations, European Union, China, Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Germany, and Iraq, condemned the attacks. The EU demanded justice for the perpetrators and expressed solidarity with the Iranian people.
"The EU condemns in the strongest terms today’s bombing in the city of Kerman in Iran. The EU expresses its solidarity with the Iranian people. This act of terror has exacted a shocking toll of civilian deaths and injuries. Our thoughts now are with the victims and their families. Perpetrators must be held accountable," stated an EU foreign affairs spokesperson.
