The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has strongly condemned the Israeli military's use of dogs to attack Palestinian prisoners, as well as allegations of sexual violence and the use of a wounded Palestinian as a human shield in the West Bank.
According to reports, Israeli soldiers have been releasing dogs on detained Palestinians, resulting in attacks and bites. The OHCHR spokesperson, Jeremy Laurence, called these actions "serious violations" of international law, including the prohibition of inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
Laurence also condemned the incident in which a wounded Palestinian was tied to the front of a military vehicle and used as a human shield in the West Bank city of Jenin. The OHCHR regional office issued a press release condemning the incident, stating that it constitutes a "flagrant violation" of international human rights law and humanitarian law binding on Israel as the occupying power.
The incident occurred on June 22 when Israeli soldiers raided a house in the El-Jabariyyat neighborhood of Jenin, injuring three young men with gunfire. One of the wounded men was tied to the hood of a military jeep and used as a human shield, preventing medical teams from reaching the injured Palestinians.
The OHCHR has called on Israel to respect its obligations under international law and to ensure that its forces do not commit such violations in the future. The organization has also urged Israel to provide compensation and justice to the victims and their families.
