Izumi Nakamitsu, a top UN official for disarmament, has criticized North Korea for undermining the global non-proliferation regime by continuing to develop its nuclear weapons programs and ballistic missile technology. Speaking at a Security Council meeting on non-proliferation in North Korea, Nakamitsu emphasized that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) is violating relevant Security Council resolutions and the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT).
According to Nakamitsu, North Korea has significantly increased its ballistic missile launch activities in recent years, conducting over 100 launches since 2022, including solid-fuel intercontinental ballistic missiles and space launch vehicles using ballistic missile technology. She urged North Korea to fully comply with its international obligations, including those under relevant Security Council resolutions.
Nakamitsu also emphasized that any transfer of weapons and ammunition must be compliant with the applicable international legal framework, including Security Council resolutions and sanctions regimes. She reiterated Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' call for all countries to avoid taking actions that could lead to further escalation in the region.
The UN official's comments come amid growing concerns over North Korea's nuclear weapons program and its implications for regional security. The development of nuclear weapons and ballistic missile technology by North Korea has significant consequences for global non-proliferation efforts and the stability of the region.
