A roof collapse at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi, India has resulted in the suspension of flight operations and the death of one person. The incident occurred on Friday morning due to heavy rainfall overnight, which caused a portion of the canopy at the old departure forecourt to collapse.
According to Indian Civil Aviation Minister Ram Mohan Naidu, rescue operations are underway at the terminal. Officials confirmed that one person has died as a result of injuries sustained in the collapse.
The airport authorities have suspended all departures from Terminal 1 and closed the check-in counters as a precautionary measure. However, arrivals continued until 10:30 am local time, with flights being redirected to other terminals.
The capital city of New Delhi has been experiencing heavy rainfall and traffic jams throughout the morning, with several roads flooding due to the inclement weather. The police have issued alerts about traffic congestion and waterlogging in various areas.
