Head coach and vice president of Lincoln Youth Sports Aaron Strader said dozens of little kids were playing a football game when someone opened fire in the 1400 block of Oberlin Street around 2:30 p.m.
Channel 11 crews found a bullet through a windshield of a truck in the area.
Officials ended the game early for safety reasons.
“I thought it was fireworks. I thought it was a team that was about to come out. But it ended up being gunshots,” Strader said. “I was standing down by our concession stand and I go to walk around the stand and I see all these kids running and crying saying they were shooting.”
Pittsburgh police said that no one was injured and they’re investigating.
However, some say the damage is already done.
“Now we got a whole two organizations worth of kids that are going to be scared,” Strader said. “Both organizations’ parents are going to be scared for their kids to be there. "
Coach Strader sent us a screenshot of an email where they requested Pittsburgh officers at the game.
He also sent over an email that appears to show a Pittsburgh officer telling members of Lincoln Youth Sports that they would be in attendance.
11 News reached out to Pittsburgh police for comment but, we haven’t heard back.
“It definitely sometimes feels like a losing game because we strive to make sure the kids have something positive to do in the communities that they live within,” said Tonya Paine Scott, president of the Western Pennsylvania Youth Athletic Association.
Scott said they hired extra security for the game, but they will need continued help from Pittsburgh police to ensure things outside of where they play are safe.
