In a disturbing incident that has left London's Muslim community on edge, the Al-Falah Institute in Hayes, a charitable foundation and educational center for women, fell victim to vandalism and arson last week. The unidentified attackers, who disabled the alarm system, breached the building at approximately 10 p.m. local time on September 26, causing extensive damage to walls, chairs, carpets, and defacing religious texts with dark-colored spray paint.
Following the initial attack, institute members reportedly contacted the police, only to be turned away, claiming that officers were too occupied and could only respond the next day. Subsequently, another assault occurred.
The institute's alarm system company informed management of potential fire in the building due to blacked-out security cameras. Despite firefighters rushing to the scene, a significant blaze had already taken hold, resulting in extensive structural damage and the burning of numerous religious books, including copies of the Quran.
The motive behind the attacks remains unclear, and the Metropolitan Police, treating the incidents as linked, have confirmed the investigation of both as acts of arson. Questions regarding the initial police response have been met with a noncommittal statement, emphasizing an ongoing, open-minded inquiry.
Mariam Tariq, the chairperson of the Al-Falah Institute, expressed frustration at the police's delayed response, asserting that timely intervention could have averted the catastrophic blaze. Tariq emphasized the institute's significance, particularly for women, as a communal hub since its establishment in 2010.
While uncertain if the attacks were Islamophobic, Tariq did not rule out the possibility. Another institute member, Ferzana, conveyed sadness over the incident but expressed gratitude that no one was injured. Despite the adversity, she voiced optimism and trust in divine intervention, stating, "Allah will help us, inshallah."
As the investigation progresses, police officials have assured ongoing support and communication with the Al-Falah Institute and local authorities. The community awaits further developments in this unsettling and as yet unresolved case.
