In a development that followed a joint investigation by The Times, The Sunday Times, and Channel 4 television, the British Police announced on Monday (September 25) that they have received several sex offence allegations involving British actor and comedian Russell Brand, aged 48. Four women have accused Brand of a series of sexual assaults.
London's Metropolitan Police issued a statement on Monday, stating, "Following an investigation by Channel 4's Dispatches and The Sunday Times, the Met has received a number of allegations of sexual offences in London."
The statement continued, "We have also received a number of allegations of sexual offences committed elsewhere in the country and will investigate these." However, specific details regarding dates, the quantity of incidents, or the nature of the offenses being investigated were not disclosed by the police.
Superintendent Andy Furphy, who is leading the investigation, emphasized, "We continue to encourage anyone who believes they may have been a victim of a sexual offence, no matter how long ago it was, to contact us."
"We understand it can feel like a difficult step to take, and I want to reassure that we have a team of specialist officers available to advise and support," Furphy added.
Russell Brand, former husband of American singer Katy Perry, has vehemently denied the sexual assault allegations. He asserted that his relationships have always been "consensual," even during a period when he admitted to being "very, very promiscuous."
