Egyptian-American comedian Bassem Youssef stated that he will not support another term for President Joe Biden, citing his inability to endorse a leader who disregards calls for a cease-fire in Gaza.
"I don't want to vote for Biden," Youssef expressed to Anadolu during an interview in Washington, DC. "I cannot lend my voice to Biden."
"And of course, I can't vote for (former President Donald) Trump. It contradicts my principles, but I cannot reward someone who ignores even the simplest plea for a cease-fire with my vote," he continued.
Youssef, a former heart surgeon turned comedian, gained global attention after his interview with Britain's Piers Morgan, where he criticized Israel's actions in Gaza and the Western portrayal of Arabs and Palestinians.
"I found myself in this situation, and it seemed to resonate with people. I can't quite explain why or how, but I'm grateful that I spoke my mind," he reflected. "I appreciate the response; it shows that people are willing to speak out."
Regarding the challenges of expressing his opinions in the US, Youssef acknowledged that obstacles exist worldwide.
"There are flaws in the American democratic system and media, but at least we have the freedom to express ourselves. I'm thankful for that and I utilize that freedom," he remarked.
"We strive to expand that freedom of expression," he added, emphasizing comedy as a vehicle for self-expression and freedom.
Youssef, residing in California, visited Washington, DC, for his 'Middle Beast' comedy tour.
"The stand-up comedy show delves into my journey from being a doctor to a television host to navigating life as an immigrant in America. It's a deeply personal narrative that resonates with anyone, regardless of their background—be it Arab, Muslim, Christian, or any immigrant in America," he concluded.
