The European Union registered a total of 2.9 billion nights spent in tourist accommodations in 2023, marking a 6.1% increase compared to the previous year and a 1.4% rise from pre-pandemic levels, as reported by Eurostat.
According to the European statistical office's findings released on Friday, Slovakia and the Czech Republic experienced the most significant surge in the number of nights spent by international guests, with both countries witnessing a remarkable 22% annual increase.
In terms of domestic guests, Greece led the pack with a 13% rise, followed by Slovakia at 11%, and Bulgaria at 9%. However, Slovenia observed a notable 17% decline in accommodations for domestic guests.
The report highlighted that the number of nights spent in tourist accommodations edged closer to pre-COVID-19 levels in May 2023. "In 2023, only March (down 4%), June (down 2%), July (down 1%), and November (down 1%) experienced declines compared to 2019. Despite these fluctuations, the overall trend for 2023 indicated an upward trajectory in the total number of nights spent, reaching a record high and nearing the milestone of 3 billion annual nights," the report added.
