UN Reiterates Call to Keep Hospitals Out of Combat Zones

The United Nations issued a strong call for the "complete adherence to international law," underscoring the imperative that hospitals must not become targets during armed conflicts. This statement follows reports of an Israeli airstrike striking the main entrance of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City.
Responding to inquiries from an Anadolu reporter regarding the UN's efforts to enforce international law and prevent Israel from targeting healthcare facilities, UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric asserted, "We steadfastly advocate for the full observance of international law, including the fundamental principle that hospitals should remain untouched in any aspect of armed conflict."
Dujarric emphasized that the UN has previously urged compliance with international humanitarian law in various conflict zones, such as Ukraine and Sudan. He remarked, "In none of these instances is the UN the entity with its hand on the trigger."
When asked about the UN's actions beyond mere condemnations of hostilities or atrocities, Dujarric clarified that he can only speak on behalf of the UN Secretary-General.
"We persistently call for this and express our stance both publicly and through private channels," he conveyed. "Other segments within the UN, including legislative components, may have a role in furthering efforts to bring an end to this conflict."
On a distressing note, on Friday, an Israeli airstrike targeted ambulances stationed in front of the main entrance of Al-Shifa Hospital in Gaza City, leading to the tragic loss of several Palestinian lives and causing numerous injuries.
