Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Friday that the US has no evidence that Russia intends to use nuclear weapons. He said the US will keep a close eye on the situation and maintain its commitment to NATO’s defense. He also criticized Belarus’s leader for making reckless and provocative decisions that undermine his country’s sovereignty and go against the wishes of his people.
Blinken’s remarks came after Putin said Friday that he had successfully moved the first batch of Russian nuclear weapons to Belarusian territory amid rising tensions with NATO over Ukraine. He said this was only the beginning and that he would finish the job by the end of the year.
Belarus’s leader said Tuesday that he asked Moscow to send him nuclear weapons that are three times more powerful than those used by the US in Japan in 1945. He said this was a “necessary” step to prevent any foreign invasion of Belarus.
Putin had previously announced that he would deploy tactical nuclear weapons and build a special storage facility for them in Belarus.
