In a resolute call to action, the United States implored members of the United Nations Security Council on Friday to denounce North Korea's recent satellite launch, which employed ballistic missile technology, and to dissuade the nation from pursuing another test.
Linda Thomas-Greenfield, the US envoy to the UN, firmly articulated the American position during the Security Council session. She urged each council member to unequivocally condemn the launch and to actively discourage the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK) from embarking on any further testing. She also emphasized the importance of unity among council members in opposing the DPRK's unlawful actions.
Addressing the council, UN Assistant Secretary-General for Middle East, Asia, and Pacific, Mohamed Khaled Khiari, stressed the imperative of implementing practical measures aimed at de-escalating tensions and reversing the perilous trajectory. He underscored the necessity of re-establishing communication channels, especially between military entities, and emphasized diplomacy and dialogue as the sole viable path forward. Khiari emphasized that isolation is not a productive approach.
Khiari commended Japan, the Republic of Korea, and the United States for their ongoing willingness to engage in dialogue with the DPRK without preconditions. He highlighted the Secretary-General's endorsement of their efforts.
Notably, North Korea conducted its second military reconnaissance satellite launch on the previous day. State media reported that the launch faltered due to an error in the rocket's "emergency blasting system" during the third stage of flight.
In a follow-up announcement, North Korea's National Aerospace Development Administration revealed intentions to proceed with a third reconnaissance satellite launch in October.
The international community's response was swift and unequivocal. Countries including the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, and Japan joined in condemning North Korea's satellite launch.
