In a significant escalation of measures, the US State and Treasury Departments unleashed a fresh wave of sanctions on Thursday, targeting more than 150 individuals and entities associated with Russia's ongoing war in Ukraine.
Secretary of State Antony Blinken, speaking about the action, explained that the US government's latest sanctions specifically zeroed in on those involved in evading and circumventing existing sanctions, entities aiding Russia's military capabilities in its conflict with Ukraine, and those contributing to Russia's future energy endeavors.
Moreover, Blinken detailed that his department had imposed sanctions on over 70 entities and individuals engaged in activities ranging from expanding Russia's energy production and export capacity to operating within Russia's metals and mining sectors. These individuals and entities also played a role in assisting Russian counterparts in evading international sanctions.
The US government took aim at various organizations involved in producing and repairing Russian weapon systems, notably the Kalibr cruise missile, which has been employed by Russian forces in attacks on Ukrainian cities and civilian infrastructure. Additionally, an individual associated with the Wagner Group was targeted for their involvement in the transportation of munitions from North Korea to Russia.
Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen emphasized that these measures were designed to disrupt Russia's military supply chains and hinder President Vladimir Putin's access to essential equipment, technology, and services necessary for conducting what she termed a "barbaric war" in Ukraine.
Yellen further underscored the commitment to holding accountable individuals and entities benefiting from the invasion and those with close ties to the Kremlin. She asserted that the actions taken by the United States demonstrated their global reach in imposing severe repercussions on Putin's oligarchs.
