Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati announced on Sunday that his government will lodge an urgent complaint against Israel with the UN Security Council. This decision comes in response to what Mikati termed as “Tel Aviv’s targeting of civilians and children” in southern Lebanon.
In a statement released by Mikati’s office, the Prime Minister condemned the “heinous crime” of Israel’s aggression against Lebanon, which resulted in the death of four individuals, including three children, and injured others due to drone fire.
Mikati described the incident as a “new stain on the global conscience” that overlooks Israel’s actions in southern Lebanon and Gaza. He vowed that the government would pursue the matter through international channels, and that an urgent complaint against Israel would be submitted to the Security Council.
The Lebanese National News Agency had earlier reported that Israeli drones targeted a civilian vehicle in the Bint Jbeil town of Nabatiye province. The victims were identified as a woman and her three granddaughters aged 10, 12, and 14. The Israeli raid also resulted in injuries to the mother of the three children and journalist Samir Ayoub, a relative of the victims, who was in a separate car.
In retaliation, the Lebanese group Hezbollah claimed to have launched rockets targeting Israel’s northern Kiryat Shemona settlement.
The border has been a site of ongoing clashes between Israeli troops and Hezbollah for a month, following the onset of the latest conflict in Gaza on Oct. 7.
