Several ships from the Russian Navy have arrived in Cuba for a brief three-day stop, marking their visit six weeks after a submarine and other Russian warships reached this Latin American nation.
As reported by the AFP news agency, the training ship "Smolny" docked at Havana's coast, the capital of Cuba, on Saturday local time, where it was greeted by the Cuban military.
The Russian embassy in Havana stated that the Smoleny, accompanied by two additional ships, is part of the Baltic Fleet group visiting the Cuban capital on a friendly mission.
On X social network, the embassy highlighted the visit as "another demonstration of the close relationship between the people of both countries."
In mid-June, Russia dispatched the nuclear submarine "Kazan" and multiple other vessels to Havana. These naval assets remained in Havana for a period of five days.
Given Cuba's proximity to the United States, the presence of a Russian nuclear submarine in Havana occurs against the backdrop of strained relations between Moscow and Washington, as well as other Western nations due to the conflict in Ukraine.
Following Kazan's appearance in Havana, the United States also positioned a submarine in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, while the Canadian warship Margaret Brook docked in Havana as well.
Carlos Fernandez de Casio Dominguez, Cuba's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, expressed in a local media interview that the country does not endorse the unauthorized appearance of the American war submarine in Guantanamo Bay (southeastern Cuba) as such naval visits necessitate an official invitation, which is currently absent.
He further emphasized the "illegal and unacceptable" nature of a foreign power (the United States) occupying a portion of Cuban territory in the eastern province of Guantanamo, noting that this action goes against the wishes of the Cuban people.
