Lead singer Peter Anthony Morgan, who co-founded the well-known reggae band Morgan Heritage with his four siblings, passed away on Sunday at the age of 46, according to his family.
The family requested privacy and expressed gratitude to everyone for their love and support ahead of time. The reason of death was not disclosed in the social media posting.
The prime minister of Jamaica, Andrew Holness, said his "heart is heavy" over the news on the social media platform X. He referred to Morgan's passing as a "colossal loss" for reggae and Jamaica.
Morgan, also referred to as "Peetah," was the son of well-known reggae musician Denroy Morgan from Jamaica.
In 1994, he and his siblings founded Morgan Heritage, and in 2016, the group's "Strictly Roots" album took home the Grammy for best reggae album.
One of his brothers, Roy “Gramps” Morgan, moved to Tennessee, where he aimed to introduce Nashville to reggae.
“If you follow reggae music and country music, it’s a lot of storytelling,” Morgan told The Associated Press in 2018. “In reggae we tell the story of people suffering.”
The other siblings who helped found the band were Una Morgan, Nakhamyah “Lukes” Morgan and Memmalatel “Mr. Mojo” Morgan.
