This surge in violence transpired following a dramatic escalation of tensions in the Middle East when Israeli forces responded to a military offensive by the Palestinian group Hamas in Israeli territories. The conflict was triggered by Hamas' initiation of Operation Al-Aqsa Flood, a multifaceted surprise attack involving rocket launches and infiltrations into Israel via land, sea, and air.
