In the initial week of the ongoing Israel-Gaza war, the number of Palestinian children killed has exceeded the entire annual toll of Ukrainian children during the first year of Russia's conflict in Ukraine, as reported by the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR).
The current conflict in Gaza has taken a severe toll on children, with at least 600 reported casualties within the first week since the conflict erupted on October 7, according to OHCHR.
In stark contrast, OHCHR documented that the first year of Russia's war in Ukraine, which commenced in February 2022, witnessed the loss of at least 487 children.
A Palestinian mother, who fled her home in Gaza City with her husband and two daughters, shared her growing concern with the Associated Press (AP). She emphasized that the current worry about her children's safety has deeply set in.
Expressing the profound parental anxiety, she conveyed, "Losing our lives, it’s ok, it’s God’s will. But the suffering, seeing our kids torn or severely injured, etc., not being able to treat them, to hospitalize them. It’s really just beyond thinking."
