The head of UNRWA, the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, reiterated his call for a ceasefire in Gaza on Saturday. He expressed deep concern, stating that the agency was receiving distressing images and footage depicting numerous casualties from the Israeli attack on its Al-Fakhoura school in Gaza.
Philippe Lazzarini, the UNRWA head, emphasized the urgency of a humanitarian ceasefire, stressing that such attacks must not become routine and must be halted immediately. He highlighted another UNRWA school in the north of Gaza being bombarded, where thousands of displaced individuals were seeking shelter.
Lazzarini condemned the repeated attacks on schools and called for an end to the ongoing horrors in the region. Earlier on Saturday, the Israeli bombardment of the UN-operated learning center in the Jabalia refugee camp resulted in dozens of Palestinians being killed and injured.
Israel initiated airstrikes and a subsequent ground incursion following an October 7 attack by the Palestinian group Hamas. The conflict has led to over 12,000 casualties, predominantly among women and children, widespread destruction of civilian structures, and the imposition of a complete blockade causing shortages of essential supplies such as food, fuel, and medicines.
